ICEC follows the successful ESCCD held in 2004 in China that covered topics ranging from the environmental sensitive cracking to various aspects of corrosion damage. ICEC is designed to provide a forum for broad spectrum of corrosion engineering and corrosion prevention technology for future industry, with emphasis on the practical aspect of industrial corrosion control.

ICEC is a global conference for the corrosion science and technology, emphasizing on the corrosion engineering. Therefore, any country can join ICEC if this country supports the main policy of ICEC. The corrosion society (or equivalent organization) of the hosting country is fully responsible for operation of ICEC with respect to both academic and financial aspects.
